The exquisite craftmanship and bespoke character of Cy Hutchinson’s work puts it in the category, not only of art, but of ‘precious objects’. He was trained in Modern Furniture Design and Making in England but, increasingly disillusioned with the 'functionality constraints' of furniture design, he turned towards sculpture around 2009. Hutchinson’s work is thus supported by a firm technical foundation, an almost childlike curiosity, an intuitive understanding of each material’s particular potential and a strong desire to push the boundaries of any given medium. While Hutcinson’s thematic direction continues to evolve, his lifelong fascination with the intricacies of nature and his passionate interest in objects produced by early cultures around the world, are often reflected his work.
