Prouvé's Table
Dennis de Caires was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and emigrated with his family to England in 1970. He studied painting at Winchester School of Art and The Royal College of Art in London, and spent a term at Cité Internationale Des Arts in Paris. De Caires has largely dedicated his oeuvre to still-life painting, with the important caveat that nothing in his paintings is ‘still’. In virtually every work, including ‘Prouvé’s Table’ and ‘Table Four’ at the Indigo Hotel, a multiplicity of colors, forms and patterns are combined into carefully calibrated compositions which deliberately challenge the viewer’s perception of spatial relationships and pictorial logic, as well as the conventions of the still-life genre itself.
