The Coelentrata Series 1

Simone Asia is a Barbadian-born artist and illustrator recognized for her intricate penmanship and finetuned attention to detail. She holds a BFA in Studio Arts and has participated in artists’ residencies at Alice Yard (Trinidad and Tobago), Ateliers ’89 (Aruba), Projects and Space (online), Fresh Milk, and Punch Creative Arena (both in Barbados), all of which have informed her artistic direction. Her work often combines a fascination with science with questions about the human psyche and metaphysics. With their color-scheme and compelling textures, the four drawings commissioned for the Indigo Hotel exemplify Asia’s playful exploitation of the viewer’s context-based readiness to see these abstract compositions as submarine landscapes, and to accept her fabricated organisms as creatures of the sea.
