Village in the Eastern Hills

Village in the Eastern Hills

Neville Legall is one of Barbados’ most-loved and prolific artists. Self-taught and working mainly in oils and watercolours, his work is centered on what he perceives as quintessential Barbadian landscapes and village scenes, and affirms the beauty of the natural environment and the dignity of its people and cultural traditions. “Village in the Eastern Hills”, which is displayed at the Indigo, beautifully captures the topography and character of north-eastern Barbados. Comprising little more than a dozen dwellings, the village is nested into the hillside with more houses cropping up on the saddleback ridge behind it. Legall taught art in schools for several years.
